What Is a Pip?
A pip is the smallest standard price move in a forex pair. For most pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD…) 1 pip = 0.0001. For JPY pairs (USDJPY, EURJPY…) 1 pip = 0.01 because the yen is quoted with 2 decimals.
Why Pip Value Matters
Because 1 pip on EURUSD is not the same dollar amount as 1 pip on GBPJPY. Miscalculating pip value is one of the top three reasons beginner forex traders bust their accounts.

The Formula
Pip value (quote currency) = pip size × lot size × contract size
Then convert to your account currency if needed.
Standard, Mini, Micro Lots
- Standard lot: 100,000 units — typical pip value on EURUSD ≈ $10 per pip.
- Mini lot: 10,000 units — ≈ $1 per pip.
- Micro lot: 1,000 units — ≈ $0.10 per pip.
Example Calculations
EURUSD, 1 mini lot
Pip = 0.0001. Lot = 10,000. Value = 0.0001 × 10,000 = $1 per pip. Simple.
USDJPY, 1 standard lot, USD account
Pip = 0.01. Lot = 100,000. Value in JPY = 0.01 × 100,000 = ¥1,000. Convert at 150 USDJPY → $6.67 per pip.
GBPJPY, 1 mini lot, USD account
Pip = 0.01. Value in JPY = 0.01 × 10,000 = ¥100. Convert at 150 USDJPY → $0.67 per pip.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming $10/pip on every pair — only true for a handful of USD-quoted pairs at standard lot.
- Confusing pips with pipettes (1/10 of a pip on 5-decimal brokers).
- Forgetting quote-currency conversion on cross-pairs.
